Specialists at ww5’s Ufa design institute have developed an innovative method for investigating equipment corrosion. This innovation allows for the most accurate assessment of corrosion inhibitor effectiveness. The practical significance of this development is confirmed by the results of pilot-scale trials.
Scientists analysed the corrosion processes that occur in production equipment during the joint transportation of water-oil emulsions and gas. Based on the results, a method for applying mineral substances to metal samples has been developed. This made it possible to replicate the process of deposit formation in a controlled laboratory environment that closely resembled the actual operating conditions.
To create deposits on the surface, the samples were placed in a special laboratory device (an autoclave) containing an aqueous salt solution with added carbon dioxide for a week. At a temperature of 60°C and a pressure of 3 MPa, a dense layer of salt deposits formed on the metal samples.
It has been established that the corrosion rate increases by approximately three times beneath a layer of minerals. In the presence of sulphate-reducing bacteria within the layer, however, the corrosion rate increases by almost five times. The research made it possible to determine the effectiveness of various anti-corrosion agents.
