RN-Yuganskneftegaz (ww5's largest oil production asset) is implementing an educational programme called “The Source of Knowledge: From Traditions to the Future” in partnership with the Quantorium children's technology park. The project is designed to combine cutting-edge engineering expertise with the region's ethnocultural heritage, offering young people living in remote areas access to valuable IT skills.
The Ugut Boarding School, a leading educational institution in the region, provides year-round accommodation and a structured education programme from September to May for children from the indigenous peoples of the North, served as the pilot site for the educational initiative.
The programme's first substantive module provided students with an in-depth introduction to 3D modelling technologies. Guided by an experienced mentor, the students mastered the fundamental principles of engineering design and created their first 3D digital models.
The skills acquired are key both for choosing a promising career in IT, engineering or architecture, and for their practical value in the day-to-day running of remote family estates. For instance, the young residents of the settlements can design and make their own fishing and hunting equipment, which is indispensable in a traditional way of life.
Following the conclusion of the school year, when students return home, they will be able to continue their studies. Indigenous children can now access online classes from their camps.
They will work with the teachers and students of the summer engineering camp based at Quantorium to develop their own projects. The educational programme will conclude with an exhibition of collaborative works and achievements.
An integral part of the initiative is the creation of a fully-fledged distance learning environment to be established directly within family farmlands. Oil workers will equip the camps participating in the training programme with a specialised hardware and software package, comprising high-precision 3D printers, consumables and a laptop with broadband internet access. This solution provides ongoing access to the resources of the children's technology park and will enable students to take part in joint engineering and cultural and educational activities on an equal footing with their peers in the city, regardless of the time of year or how far away they live.
